APPLYING FOR A RESIDENCE PERMIT

Those persons who are not possess citizens of an EU member state, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland and who wish to work in Germany need permits for long-term residence.

WHICH RESIDENCE PERMIT IS THE RIGHT ONE?

1. Temporary Residence Permit (“Aufenthaltserlaubnis”)
This is a temporary residence permit which is linked to a specific purpose (study/occupational training, gainful employment).

2. Permanent Residence Permit (“Niederlassungserlaubnis”)
This is a permanent residence permit which allows you to engage in gainful employment. The requirements for such a permit are: you must have had a temporary residence permit for five years, secure means of livelihood or support, no previous criminal record, a verifiable place of work, sufficient knowledge of the German language, basic knowledge of the German legal and social system and a fixed place of abode in Germany.

3. EU Permanent Residence Permit (“Erlaubnis zum Daueraufenthalt – EU”)
This is a permanent residence permit which allows you to engage in gainful employment. The requirements are similar to those for the Permanent Residence Permit in No. 2 above. You are also entitled to obtain a temporary residence permit in other EU member countries.

4. EU Blue Card (“Blaue Karte EU”)
A residence permit restricted to a period of four years. You will find more information under “EU Blue Card”
